Mon General’s state-of-the-art Orthopedic Center, located on the 1st Floor of the hospital’s South Tower, is designed to meet the growing needs of the residents of north-central West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania well into the 21st Century. The 21,700 square foot facility features four large operating rooms equipped with the latest equipment to treat complex orthopedic illnesses, including joint replacement and other specialized orthopedic procedures.

Program Recognition

Mon General has been named a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement® by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia. This distinction recognizes Mon General for demonstrating a commitment to providing quality care and better overall outcomes for knee and hip replacement procedures.

Blue Distinction® is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare.

State-of-the-Art Operating Rooms

The Orthopedic Center features four large operating rooms, designed to ensure that physicians and staff can safely and efficiently care for patients. The rooms feature an LED Surgical Lighting and Visualization System. These lights provide high intensity, pure white natural light to allow surgeons to see every detail with no distracting shadows. LED lights emit less heat than traditional lighting technologies, keeping the operating room cool and comfortable, even during long procedures, and reducing the risk to exposed tissue.

In addition to the innovative lighting system, the operating rooms feature an Equipment Management System that maximizes room space by organizing surgical equipment and medical services in one centralized space. No longer is it necessary for equipment to be wheeled in and out of the rooms on carts. Equipment is attached to ceiling-mounted arms that can be adjusted to reach anywhere the surgeon needs it.  This frees up floor space and eliminates cables on the ground, making it easier to clean the rooms and reduce clutter.

To further enhance patient safety, floors have an antimicrobial surface to reduce the risk of infection.

The Orthopedic Center was designed with an eye on the future. If demand for Orthopedic Procedures increases, the center has space to add two additional operating rooms.

Pre- and Post-Surgery

In addition to the four operating rooms, the center features a 13-bed holding area for pre- and post-operation care. The pre- and post-operation rooms were designed with patient privacy in mind.

The Orthopedic Center also has an eight-bed Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where patients are monitored as they come out of anesthesia.

Patient Convenience

Located on the 1st Floor of Mon General’s South Tower, the Orthopedic Center has convenient parking adjacent to the center’s entrance and a front door drop off area. Orthopedic patients can easily be dropped off and picked up right from the center.

A dedicated Orthopedic Center means shorter wait times for patients needing orthopedic surgery. Our electronic patient tracking board keeps family and guests apprised of the patient’s progress. And, being located in Mon General, patients who remain in the hospital following surgery all go to a designated unit with specially trained nurses

Mon General has one of the largest groups of orthopedic surgeons of any hospital in the State of West Virginia and currently performs approximately 3,600 orthopedic procedures annually, including knee and hip replacements.
