Mary Lou Retton

Olympic Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton is the official “Brand Spokesperson” for Mon Health .   She has been the voice and face of Mon Health  in a variety of advertising campaigns since 2012, helping to spread the word about the award-winning healthcare and services offered by Mon Health Medical Center.

A native of Fairmont, WV, Mary Lou captured American hearts during the 1984 Summer Olympics when she became the first American to win the all-around gold medal for women’s gymnastics after scoring a perfect 10 on the vault.  She also won individual silver medals for Team and Vault and bronze medals for the Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise. Her five medals were the most won by any individual athlete at the 1984 Olympics. She retired from competitive gymnastics in 1986.

Why was Mary Lou chosen to be the Mon Health Medical Center Brand Spokesperson?

Mary Lou is more than a local sports hero. She is the embodiment of good health and commitment to excellence. Those qualities mirror our own values at Mon Health .  Since her retirement from gymnastics, Mary Lou has been an advocate for health, traveling the world promoting nutrition, exercise and good health habits.

“For me it was a natural fit,” Mary Lou says, of her relationship with Mon Health . Her father had heart surgery at Mon Health Medical Center. In addition, both her father and brother had hip replacement surgery at the hospital.

“At this stage in my life I am very particular of who I lend my face and name to,” she said. “When Mon Health  came and said we’d like to work with you, I didn’t think twice about it. Mon Health truly has affected me personally within my immediate family.”

While most people may not associate gymnastics with healthcare, there are similarities. Both involve hard work, dedication, perseverance, risk taking, striving for excellence and not getting complacent. These are values that both Mary Lou and Mon Health share.

“I’m very proud to have my name and face affiliated with Mon Health,” Mary Lou said.
