Ostomy Care

Ostomy care is the management and support of a patient with a surgical opening called a stoma. This opening is typically created in the bladder, ileum, or colon for the temporary or permanent passage of urine or feces. The goal of this is to redirect bodily waste because of malfunctioning parts of the urinary or digestive system. For most ostomies a pouch is worn over the stoma to collect urine or stool, though there are some people that have a continent diversion that eliminates the need for a pouch.

725,000 to 1 million people live with an ostomy.  Common reasons for this can be cancer, intestinal obstruction, trauma, birth defects, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, or spinal cord injury.

Mon Health Wound Care has an ostomy management team that will work with you to evaluate your stoma, current pouching system, how this impacts your activities of daily living and make recommendations based on your individual needs.

The team is comprised of Ostomy Management Specialists (OMS), a Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (WOCN), and is a physician lead team.  A full range of outpatient services for the patient with an ostomy (colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy) can be established and assistance can be provided.  Contact our office at 304-285-1460 for an appointment.

No referral is required for most insurance plans, note VA insurance does require a referral.
