Mon Health System Hosts Explorer Program for Local Community

Posted Date: 4/30/2024

Mon Health System recently held its first Explorer Program open house event for local teens.

In an effort to engage those who may be interested in healthcare careers, the Explorer Program at Mon Health will provide an enriching opportunity for individuals aged 14-20 to explore potential careers at Mon Health.

Mon Health Medical Center staff members hosted the Explorer Program’s first cohort on Wednesday, April 24 where teens were invited to take a tour of Mon Health Medical Center and “get to know” Mon Health. Participants will have the opportunity to watch educational demonstrations, participate in activities, interact with new technology, and more related to healthcare careers.

“Young people are the future of healthcare, and we were proud to host this inaugural Explorer Program at Mon Health Medical Center to get teens involved and interested in a potential career in healthcare,” said Dr. Krystal Atkinson, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Nursing Officer of Mon Health Medical Center and Chief Nursing Executive of Mon Health System. “It was a joy to see both the staff and attendees engaged in the learning and excitement of the program. We are looking forward to hosting more events like this in the future and remaining engaged our community.”

The Explorer Program’s first cohort at Mon Health will continue to meet on the third Wednesday of each month to explore healthcare careers throughout the hospital. Departments available for attendees to explore will be Cardiology, Laboratory Sciences, Radiology Services, Oncology, Endoscopy, Surgical Services, Human Resources, and Nursing Services.

The second cohort of the Explorer Program will launch in August. Individuals interested in participating in the program can contact Nate James at Nate.James@VandaliaHealth.org.

“We are excited to work with Mon Health to provide this hands-on opportunity for youth in our communities and learn about all that healthcare has to offer,” said Scott Hanson, Chief Executive Officer of Mountaineer Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.  “Exploring is a national workforce development program designed to partner youth with local businesses to ‘explore’ job and career interests. The hope is that this experience with Mon Health will provide these youth a path to a meaningful healthcare opportunity and the option to do so right here in West Virginia.”
